when life gets ya down.

Today was just one of those days. You know, when nothing goes right, all the day long.

But when life gets ya down, here's what you need to do:

Get your handsome husband. Go to the store and buy a gallon of mint
chocolate chip ice cream (because a quart just doesn't cut it on
these days). Come home and put on an old Christmas record
from 1969. Listen to Christmas music while eating ice cream on the
couch with your handsome husband.

I'll tell you what, that put a smile on my face in less than five seconds.

this weekend...

This weekend, Zac and I...
  • slept in three days in a row.
  • spent a day in Salt Lake City.
  • discovered our new favorite sandwich place.
  • shopped for three hours straight.
  • went to my favorite Salt Lake restaurant.
  • celebrated our first anniversary in a hotel downtown.
  • listened to church hymns playing at McDonald's on Sunday morning.
  • drove home in the pouring rain.
  • ate breakfast for dinner.
  • played way too many rounds of Speed on our bed.
  • played around with our new dehydrator, and made dried mangos and tomatoes.
  • found our new favorite cupcake cafe (we think...).
  • and enjoyed another one.
  • finally bought a wreathe for our front door.
How was your weekend? Oh, and Happy Memorial Day!

happy one-year anniversary to us!

Dear Zachary Max,
One year ago to this very day, I married you in the Salt Lake City temple. The days leading up to our marriage were exciting, annoying, slow, and wonderful. Remember when, on the night before our wedding, I completely broke down because my flowers were all wrong? I still, to this day, hate my wedding bouquet.

When that day finally came, you picked me up from my parents' house in the wee hours of the morning, and we drove ourselves up Bacchus Highway to the temple grounds. We sang Chapel of Love by The Dixie Cups almost the whole way up there, replacing the word Chapel with Temple, because, I mean, that's where we were going!

When we arrived at the temple, we went our separate ways, and my mom (along with all the cute, old ladies in the temple) helped me into my temple dress. As my mom, a temple lady, and I were walking to go meet you, I realized that your ring was still in my bag. The temple lady seemed stressed the moment I said something about it. But my mom went back and got it before the ceremony even began. It seemed like hours went by before they led me into the Celestial room where we sat together, waiting to be married.

Our ceremony was kind of long, but maybe it was because I had butterflies, and I just wanted to be married already. I hardly remember what was said before we were married. Then it happened! We were married. And that first smooch as husband and wife was so sweet.

Before we met up to say hi to family and friends, I had to put on my wedding dress, that just so happened to have a tear in it. It was a good thing that I had brought a needle and thread, and that my mom is one talented seamstress. I remember being so anxious to see my new husband, and my mom was just concerned about touching up my make up and hair, and I got really annoyed.

We walked out of those two doors together, holding hands, and gave each other another big smooch on the steps. I hugged everyone I saw, and it made me so happy to see so many people who cared about us. The next few hours were spent taking way too many pictures, until we finally were able to change out of our clothes, and meet our friends and families for a luncheon at The Lion House. Remember how delicious and filling that lunch was?

On the way down to our reception that night, we were too tired for words, and so we stopped at a grocery store and got a Mountain Dew for me, and a Dr. Pepper for you. I don't usually drink caffeine, but I'm glad I did that night, because I would've fallen asleep.

Our outside reception started off nice, but then it had started to rain, which bugged me a lot back then, but now I think it was pretty cool, especially since our first dance was in the rain. By the end of the night, the bottom six inches of my wedding dress was brown from the dirt, and we drove away in your car, and off to our little place in Provo.

What a good, good day, husband. I can't believe it's been a whole year already. I've learned so much from you, and I can't believe how much I love you now compared to then. The amount is significantly higher. You've taught me patience (even though I'm still working on it), and to talk things out, because you and I both know that I like being quiet when I'm frustrated. You've taught me to better my faults, but at the same time, you focus on the good things about me. You've taught me how to love, and how to be a best friend. Marrying you is the best decision I've ever made, and I'm so happy you're mine for eternity! I sure do love you, Zac, and I'm excited to see what the future will bring for us. Happy first anniversary, my love.

the road trip: day two.

On the second day of this little road trip, we slept in until about 10:00 in the morning, and it was lovely. We ate Cheerios for breakfast (our favorite), and got ready in our own time.

When we finally made it out the door, we headed straight for the Red Cliffs that overlook the valley. We walked around, stopped to take pictures, and walked some more. We scouted out our spot for watching the solar eclipse that would take place that night. Zac even convinced me to climb up an incredibly steep rock (that had a drop down of about 20 feet right next to you) to find the perfect spot. And even though heights scare the bejeebers out of me, I did it! We stood there on the red rock, looking over the entire valley--the temple, trees, houses, buildings, streets, and cars--and it was worth the scary hike up!

When we climbed down, we drove on over to Cafe Rio for some lunch. We found out that the Cafe Rio in St. George is our least favorite, because they don't give you as much rice, beans, and meat than the ones in Utah Valley do. Also, they didn't have knives. But whatever. We managed.

Since it was Sunday, we headed to the temple, just a few blocks away. We were in everyday clothes, which made me feel a little weird, but the temple grounds were just beautiful. Ever since my Grandpa Earl died, I've felt so much peace everytime I go to the temple grounds. My Grandpa used to serve at the Jordan River temple, and he would talk to the gardeners there, ask them their gardening secrets, and even score a few seeds if he was lucky. My Grandpa loved the temple, and so do I.

In the evening, we quickly drove up to the Red Cliffs again and found our spot on the rock overlooking the valley. It was time for the solar eclipse! There were quite a few people on the rock with us, and a group of men offered us some solar eclipse glasses (because we didn't bring any, whoops), and told us to come hang out with them. Their names were Cory, Andrew, Tom, and Shane, and they told us about all their trips to different countries to see the solar eclipses. These guys were solar eclipse chasers, and that's what I want to be! It was so much fun talking to them and hearing all their stories.

It took about an hour or so for the solar eclipse to turn into a complete ring of fire, and in the meantime, we stood watching it slowly make its way through our 3D-looking glasses. When the moon was perfectly center with the sun, the entire crowd on the rock cheered and cheered! It was a celebration! We had seen a solar eclipse. (And no, we didn't get any pictures, mostly because you couldn't see the eclipse with the naked eye... or the naked lens. Sorry!)

We spent the rest of the night in our motel, and at McDonalds, for a quick dinner (smoothie for me, burger and fries for Zac). We decided we'd take it easy since it was Sunday. And yes, we watched a couple more episodes of Lie to Me. How did you know?

the road trip: day one.

We're home! And boy, did we have so much fun on this little road trip of ours. I've never had such fun being stuck in the car for four hours at a time. What with all the snacks, music, and company (I kind of like being with my husband, a lot), it sure made for an enjoyable time.

We started our road trip right when we got off work last Friday evening. With the couple of pit stops and dinner, we made it into St. George a little after 10:00 pm. The little motel we stayed in was just darling and cozy, just what I wanted.

The next morning, we got up early and walked the few blocks to the Farmer's Market at Ancestor Square. It was gorgeous and lively, with lots of great things to see, taste, hear, and buy! We left there with a loaf of sun-dried tomato and cheese bread, and a jar of homemade salsa.

For lunch, we stopped by 25 Main, a local cafe and cupcake shop, and my oh my! I would eat there everyday for the rest of my life if I could! I would easily say it's the best place in town. I recommend the Penne Primavera and the Chocolate Raspberry cupcake! What a treat!

We also spent time walking through the city for an hour or two, where we came upon old Brother Brigham taking a rest on a bench, so we stopped to say hi. We also explored a little antique shop, where I bought a pretty, gold necklace to wear that day.

Dinner was quite fantastic, as well. We ate at Pier 49, where we ordered a whole pizza to share (and we almost ate all of it, until we stopped at 3 pieces each, because it was just too much). On our way out the door, we saw Appa, in car form! We spent the rest of the night at the motel, watching our current favorite show, Lie to Me. It was a long day spent mostly on our feet and taking too many pictures, but it was good to us.

See day two and three of our road trip here and here.
